The first internship, made possible by generous donors, took place successfully in 2026.

Ronan Carvill is the first master’s student to complete an applied internship at Southern African Wildlife as part of our “Skills for Nature” project. The focus is on the mutual exchange of knowledge: Ronan contributed his expertise in education and science while also learning a great deal from the local team about wildlife and nature conservation in Africa. This fosters new ideas, valuable synergies, and friendships that extend far beyond the internship.

As he says goodbye, Ronan says:

“This was one of the most academically and personally enriching experiences of my life. Textbooks alone could never have provided such direct insight into wildlife conservation and wildlife management. It wasn’t just an internship—it was the adventure of a lifetime.”

Wendy, his mentor in college, also has very positive things to say:

“Working with Ronan was a real pleasure. His professionalism, dedication, and willingness to get involved in all aspects of our work left a lasting impression on the entire team. He was a valuable asset to our department and took advantage of every opportunity—from fieldwork to research projects.”

We are very pleased with this successful first exchange as part of “Skills for Nature.”
