A dishwashing story in Africa!

After Excellent Mbuso Mhangane had to leave school early due to difficult circumstances at home, he always had the feeling that he was capable of more. He was a true jack of all trades and had tried his hand at various jobs, from carpentry to foreman, storekeeper and security guard. The latter eventually led him back to Welverdiend when he applied for a job as a security guard at @southernafricanwildlifecollege in 2018.

During his time at college, Mbuso was particularly interested in training to become a field ranger. Although he could not afford the course, he did not let this deter him from his newfound passion. During his breaks, he read books about wildlife, which caught the attention of Sboniso Phakathi, one of the college’s project managers. After some internal discussions at management level, Mbuso got the opportunity he had been looking for: a sponsorship to attend the Basic Armed Field Ranger Training.

After completing the program, he was given the opportunity to participate in a ranger training course as a co-instructor. His ability to speak eight of the eleven languages spoken in South Africa has made him an asset to the department, which receives students from all over the country and beyond. Mbuso loves being a field ranger instructor. Not only because he can positively impact the lives of the participants, but also because he can learn something from the students every day. It’s wonderful to see how the college has been able to support and shape the life of one of its employees.
